QS/1 is a division of the J M Smith Corporation (1944), one of the largest privately-held companies in South Carolina. In 1977, the company recognized healthcare professionals’ need for specific software and hardware packages designed to help provide more efficient and effective care for customers and pharmacy patients. QS/1′s first system was the QS/1 Pharmacy System, now known as NRx®, and was designed for the independent pharmacy market.
QS/1 is committed to advanced technology. Our highly-skilled team of professionals provides customers with the latest products, services and support necessary to efficiently and profitably run their businesses.
Spartanburg, South Carolina
QS/1 was developed with one simple focus in mind. Jim Smith believed that pharmacists needed a computer system to help manage their practice. He and several other J M Smith programmers set out to accomplish this task. Years later, QS/1 remains at the forefront of technology developed for the healthcare industry. Over 500 dedicated employees manage development, support and marketing for all software products including NRx, SystemOne®, Point-of-Sale, PrimeCare®, CornerDrugstore.com® and Interactive Voice Response.
His sons, Jim Smith and Henry Dale Smith, continued to operate and grow the business. Jim Smith, an engineer and a pharmacist, had a passionate interest in automation. From mainframe and then into smaller computers, the data processing entity flourished. Jim Smith's visionary leadership laid most of the groundwork for what would become one of the largest and most successful privately-held corporations in South Carolina.
Mr. James M. Smith, Sr. established the Smith Drug Company in Spartanburg, SC. He then progressively began exiting the retail drugstore business as he further grew and expanded with wholesale drug distribution. He passed away suddenly in late 1951.
James M. Smith, Sr. opened a small pharmacy in Asheville, NC. Over the next two decades, Smith established 16 other pharmacies throughout the Carolinas and Georgia.
